First held in 1981, Big Al's Poker Run has become one of Perth's most well known hot rod events.

In the past 26 years, the Poker Run has grown from an initial entrant number of 52 in 1981 to a record 850 for its 21st celebration run in 2001.  It now as an event that commands six months worth of organising, involves numerous government departments and attracts a growing list of sponsors.

Cut-off date for Australian vehicles introduced for the 2008 Big Al’s Poker Run

After much deliberation, the organising committee of Big Al’s Poker Run have decided to limit entries of future events to cars manufactured in Australia prior to January 1st, 1978.  This cut-off date will also include Japanese and European cars, while cars of US manufacture will not be restricted.

The decision to create a cut-off date has not been taken lightly, as there have been no restrictions on the type of car that can enter since the inception of the Poker Run in 1981.

Due to the steady growth of the event — from a little over 50 cars at the inaugural to over 700 in recent years — and the demand on resources and the restricted space available at venues, the need to limit the number of cars has been deemed necessary.

Always intended as an event for hot rods and cars of American origin, it is hoped that the creation of a cut-off date will attract more of these cars back to the event.  The pre-’78 cut-off will still allow the classic Aussie muscle cars and cruisers that have always been a part of the Poker Run.

Holdens up to WB, Toranas up to LX and Geminis up to TD will ensure that those of you that love your Monaros, SLR/5000s and hot four Holdens won’t be disappointed.

For the Blue Oval fans, Falcons up to XC and Fairlanes and LTDs up to ZH and Cortinas up to TE will still be able to enjoy Perth’s biggest cruise, while Mopar fans will be happy to hear that the last of the Aussie-built Valiants — the CM — will also be welcome.
